The melon shape pottery jar is a traditional form made at Santa Clara. The best examples are beautifully shaped, carved, slipped and polished. This example, signed Margaret Tafoya, shows precision, skill and beauty.

Margaret was known for her beautiful polished slip as well as her refined carving. This example certainly meets that definition. Margaret divided the design into two sections, one plain and the other with carved, somewhat angled ribs.
