butterfly design with channel work
3/4" wide x 7/8" high
sterling silver, spandela shell (also called spiny oyster), mother of pearl, and onyx
This pair of earrings is a fine example of the very fine mosaic inlay combined with very fine silverwork that master Zuni jewelers made during the 1930s-1950s.
Be sure to notice the precise fitting of the stones to each other. This was very difficult to do with the tools the Zuni generally had at hand during that period. 1930s-1950s is the classic period of Zuni channelwork and mosaic work, during which the Zuni developed the style for which they are currently known.
Currently screwbacks, these earrings can be converted to posts, if the purchaser wishes.
