The Nez Perces Indians, along with their neighbors, the Umatilla and the Yakima, are from the Columbia River Basin (Idaho and eastern Washington). They were horse breeders who lived a migratory life.
They twined beautiful bags and hats out of cornhusk, hemp, string, dyed cornhusk, and wools acquired through traders that were originally from Germantown, Pennsylvania.
This hat is an outstanding example of Nez Perce weaving.
