The Mono Indians (Monache) lived in central California near the Owens Valley Paiute an the Yokuts. During the early part of the 20th century, their baskets were often classified, along with the nearby Yokuts, as "Tulare" baskets. These baskets are often referred to as among the finest basketry made in the world.
While weaving with the same materials as the Yokuts Indians, The Monache or Mono preferred to inclue a vertical design along with the snake band design. This particular basket also has a beautifully executed cross design within flanking borders along the neck of the basket, adding an elegance and refinement to the basket.
This is a very fine example of a Mono bottleneck basket, one of the finest we have seen. It is beautifully and tightly woven and has a wonderful patina.
