The Western Apache were consummate weavers of baskets. The weaver of this basket Is one of the most skilled and artistic.
This is a very compelling and evocative basket, drawing upon the brilliant sun of the Southwest and the Mission-style church in each settlement. If you have travelled to Apache country in New Mexico and Arizona, you can easily recall the heat of the sun and the brilliance of the church in the light of the day as you look at this basket.
Like their cousins the Navajo, the Western Apache frequently incorporated images from their daily life in the objects they made, most often illustrating dogs, deer and people. This basket has a more emotional basis with its weaver clearly weaving a "painting" of her daily life.
