The Tlingit Indians live along the Northwest Coast and are noted for their very finely twined baskets. "Rattletop" baskets have either seeds or lead shot woven into the top knob, causing the basket to rattle as it is handled.

Spruce root is extremely flexible when it is new but it becomes fragile as it ages. Twined baskets cannot be rewoven if damaged. This basket is in mint condition and is very finely woven.
