The Pomo Indians of North Central California are widely recognized as having been among the best of all bastry weavers in the world. They lived from the Pacific Ocean to Clear Lake in California and had abundant resources which provided ready food, shelter, and materials with which to weave.
They were versatile weavers, excelling in twining as well as coiling, including the abiliy to weave variatioons of both. they coiled using both single rod and 3-rod foundations, the latter being more difficult and time consuming.
This basket is woven out of sedge and dyed bracken fern using a 3-rod foundation. The negative design and the extremely even stitching and coiling make this basket a wonderful addition to any collection.
