In the late 19th century, after the Plains Indians were forced onto Reservations, rodeos and circuses traveled the West. They offered the warrior an opportunity to "continue to be a warrior" by reenacting previous battles. Participants in these shows often dressed in "fancy" clothing which included beaded hide gauntlets.

This pair of gauntlets has descended through private collections and it is in remarkable condition. The beadwork is beautifully done and the faceted beads include glass and metal beads, helping date the gauntlets to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The leather is soft and supple.
