Santa Clara jar
signed Camilio Tafoya
incised black jar with avanyu design
5 3/4" diameter by 5 1/2" high
1950s-1970s
$900.
Camilio Tafoya (1902-1995) was the son of Sara Fina and Geronimo Tafoya, the brother of Margaret Tafoya, and the father of Joseph Lonewolf and Grace Medicine Flower. He is well-known for having perfected the process of carving blackware pottery at Santa Clara.
This fine jar is an example of the fine carving that he did as well as the artistry of the avanyu design that he made. His avanyu or water serpent design has a very distinctive Japanese flavor with elaborate feathers and curves.
