Black-on-black jars were developed by Maria Martinez and her husband Julian Martinez in the 1920s. Maria Martinez' work is distinguished by lustrous shine and beautiful form combined with beautifully painted design in matte black painted by various family members.

Popovi Da (1922-1971), Maria's oldest son, is considered the finest painter in Maria's family. Pots that he made with Maria are always sought after, especially if they have the gun metal finish, which is only achieved by "perfect firing"

Demand by the public for signatures resulted in Maria and Popovi adding signatures with dates to their pottery (1164=11/64)
