This San Ildefonso bowl has a geometric design over a highly polished black ground.
Black-on-black jars were developed by Maria Martinez and her husband Julian Martinez in the 1920s. Maria Martinez' work is distinguished by lustrous shine and beautiful form combined with beautifully painted design in matte black painted by various family members, in this case, painted by Santana Martinez, her daughter-in-law.
This bowl has the earlier signature of "Marie and Santana". It has beautiful form, design, and polish.
