Navajo double saddle blanket
eyedazzler design
woven out of early 4-ply Germantown wools
circa 1880-1885
very good condition
(R0425)
$2800.
The blankets produced by the Navajo in the 1880s-1890s were highly prized as the finest Navajo textiles being woven at that time. The Navajos loved bright colors and with the advent of commercially-produced bright wools being made available to the best weavers during this period, their designs exploded into what came to be known as "eyedazzlers".
This blanket has some rare and early wools in it, most especially the mustard-color and the purple wools. It has great graphic qualities, dynamic interaction of complimentary colors with a unique and spirited design. The center emerges as a foreground and the blanket displays a three-dimensional quality.
