Grace Medicine Flower and her father Camilio Tafoya are members of the renowned Tafoya family (Grace's aunt was Margaret Tafoya). Both, along with Grace's brother Joseph, are icons of innovative Santa Clara pottery. Beginning in the 1960s, they began developing a sgraffito technique, which was an innovation upon traditional Santa Clara pottery.

As exemplified by this elegant jar, Grace is continually innovating. She utilizes three different clays in this pot and combines sgraffito designs with beautifully polished clay. Beautifully done on a finely shaped seed jar, this work becomes true art, in the highest sense of the word. Be sure to note the sgraffito avanyu designs as well as the overall "feel" of the designs: there is a decided Asian-influence, which was used by Grace Medicine Flower in her early period years. We consider this pot to be a masterpiece by Grace Medicine Flower and Camilio Tafoya.
