Depicts Spiderwoman emerging into the Middle World, as per the Navajo Creation tale
woven out of handspun wool, natural and synthetic-dyed
circa 1920s-1930s

(R0453)

This pictorial textile has the quality of great folk art. Very well woven out of soft Churro wool and in excellent condition, it shows Spiderwoman emerging into the middle earth. Spiderwoman represents the source for the birth of mankind in the Navajo Creation tale. Please note that she is dressed in very traditional Navajo garb, including necklace and concho belt.

There is also a strong Rio Grande influence to the design of this rug. Its proportions mimic those of Rio Grande textiles and the 4 5-pointed stars are also a Rio Grande influence.
