The Pomo Indians live north of San Francisco, from the Pacific Ocean to Clear Lake. They have long been recognized as being extremely versatile weavers, weaving various forms of twined basketry and of coiled basketry.
This basket is coiled with the weave being particularly tight as reflected in the high stitch count and high coil count. It has a very small stain in its bottom. Perhaps a previous owner spilled something near it. I have not owned another Pomo with such incredible weave.
The insertion of quail plume feathers was done at the time the basket was coiled. They have survived the years well.
