Very important figural Havasupai basket from the Green Collection

Sotheby’s, Parke-Bernet held two landmark sales of The Green Collection of American Indian art in 1971. The sale of the Green Collection is hailed as the landmark sale of American Indian Art in the 20th century. It drew attention to the high quality and aesthetics of the best of American Indian and it was the trigger for the onset of the strong commercial marketplace for American Indian Art that continues to this day. This basket was offered as lot 86 in the November 1971 sale. The very fine quality of weave along with the very realistic representation of cattle and horses makes it a very desirable basket to own.

The Havasupai live in the Havasu Canyon, which adjoins the Grand Canyon. They live near other Apache and weave with the same materials (willow and devil's claw). Their designs are remarkably similar to the Yavapai but they can be distinguished by some technical details. Havasupai baskets are fairly rare, perhaps because they had limited trade with others due to the difficulty they had in getting their baskets to the top of the canyon and thus to traders. In addition, they are a fairly small tribe.

The best of the Havasupai coiled baskets were woven between 1929 and 1940 (*see book references). There were improved routes to the top of the canyon by this period and the weavers could now weave innovative and desirable baskets to be sold. Trade in American Indian baskets has always rewarded those with figural design elements, human and animal.

Havasupai figural basket from the landmark Green Collection with horses and steer

The Sale of the Green Collection at Sotheby’s, Parke Bernet in 1971 was the landmark sale of American Indian Art in the 2nd half of the 20th century. The Green Collection included some of the very finest and rarest of American Indian basketry and it triggered widespread recognition of the artistry of Native American works which continues until today. Navajo (Dine) Late Classic blanket from Bosque Redondo and very fine Washo degikup

We are very happy to start the new year by offering this very rare Navajo (Dine) Late Classic blanket that dates to Bosque Redondo, where the Navajo were held by the US Army from 1863-1868. This was a terrible time for the Navajo who were uprooted from their homes and forced to walk what is known as “The Long Walk” to a camp near Fort Sumner. Supplies were scarce and conditions were harsh, so the Navajo were dependent on wools supplied to them by the US Army.

In addition to the Tenorio jar, we are pleased to offer a group of contemporary Navajo and Hopi bracelets that have been tucked away since their purchase in the mid-1980s. Many are for small wrists. The annual Delaware Antiques Show is being held online this year. It opens this Saturday, November 7th and will run for an entire week through November 14th. You can attend it for free during those days. Enter the show through this link

Upcoming Delaware Online Antiques Show

Because of the covid-19 pandemic, Winterthur Museum has decided to hold the Delaware Antique Show Online this year. It will run from November 7th-November 14th, 2020. You can access the show and dealers for free throughout this period. In addition, the show organizers decided to offer a $100. early buying option for Friday, November 6th, in order to raise some money for educational programs at Winterthur. Please note that the museum refunded all show fees to the participating 47 dealers. The dealers will restock as they sell items so everyday there are likely to be fresh items available.

We have some amazing works that are fresh to the market that we will be offering in this show. I am posting three textiles today to my website to make these items available to those of you on my mailing list first. In addition, I have recently posted several baskets and pots to my website. Philadelphia Online Show

Exciting news! The Philadelphia Show, sponsored by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in response to the COVID-19 public health crisis and its cancellation, has been reconceptualized as the Philadelphia Online Show. It is scheduled to open May 14th and continue virtually on InCollect through May 28th. We have posted 30 objects in this show, some of which have never before been offered and several whose prices have been lowered to make those items very enticing.

These items are not yet posted on our website or anywhere else. Please be sure to go to the show to see what we are offering. Of course, you can contact me directly about any questions you might have or whether or not I have other items in your interest areas. All sales arrangements will be made directly with the dealer and there are no extra fees for buying an item through the Online Show.

It is important to remember that the show is being mounted in a separate show section in Incollect. When the show is over, the items will be removed from Incollect unless a dealer requests that the item(s) be moved over to a regular Incollect listing. The link to the show: Philadelphia Online Show

The ADA (Antique Dealers’ Association of America) Online Show is opening today, Friday, April 24th and will run through April 27th. The ADA is made up of the leading dealers in American antiques, many of whom do the Philadelphia Show and the Delaware Antiques Show. Because so many of our shows have been canceled, we decided to reinstate the ADA Online Show.

More than 50 ADA dealers are participating in this show and there are more than 1600 objects listed for sale. You will be able to browse through them all or you can look up items in a particular area of interest as well as search for what a particular dealer has listed. Purchases will be easy and all sales will be with the dealer directly.

We urge you to set aside time to attend this online show this weekend. No lines, no entry fees, total privacy. No one has seen the show (including participating dealers) until the show opens.

We have posted 40 objects and look forward to discussing them with you. Most of them are not on our website and the listings include items that are fresh to us.

Upcoming Show Information

We hope all of you are well and staying safe as we adjust to the new daily realities of the Covid-19 pandemic. We send all of our support and best wishes to each of you who is battling this illness and we send you our wishes for a successful recovery.

As is apparent, the shows that we participate in have all been impacted by the rapid spread this terrible illness. We want to update you about information that we currently have:

  1. For those of you who missed my previous announcement, the 2020 Philadelphia [Antique and Art] Show has been cancelled for 2020. It will be held again next year, 2021.

  2. The ADA (Antique Dealers’ Association of America), made up of the finest of dealers in American antiques and art, has decided to revive our ADA Online Antiques and Art Show. In Summary, “Our members are excited to revive this innovative event and we anticipate great offerings from our diverse dealers. We have asked our dealers to showcase items that they held back for the shows that have been cancelled. So expect to see the best in American (and some European) antiques, fine art, folk art, Americana, Native American, and other decorative arts.” The show will run April 24-April 27, 2020. More information can be found at http://www.adadealers.com/html/online_show.php. We will post additional information on our Website Show Page as time gets closer. Dealers in this show plan on offering first rate and often fresh material that they had planned on offering at the Philadelphia Show and other shows. Be sure to pay attention to the offerings when they are posted.

  3. We just heard that SWAIA has officially postponed Indian Market 2020, which was scheduled to be held in Santa Fe August 15-16. While not a surprise, given the ongoing spread and ferocity of the virus, the cancellation of this show is sobering news. It will have a major negative impact on all the artists and businesses of Santa Fe as it provides the majority of annual income to all these people. The 5th Art, Design & Antiques Show will be opening very soon! This boutique show has steadily generated enthusiasm for its variety of specialties represented, the quality of the offerings, and the ease of wandering around and speaking with the dealers. It has drawn the attention of dealers in many different fields and there is a long waiting list to get into the show. We urge you to come see for yourself why this show is so appealing. It takes place during Antiques Week in New York City and is held at St Ignatius Church on Park AVenue and 84th Street.

Delaware Antiques Show

We have been busy preparing for the upcoming Delaware Antiques Show. We will be bringing some very exciting fresh inventory to this show, including Beadwork, Historic and Contemporary pottery and Textiles. Most of these items are coming directly from homes in which they have descended.

Included in this newsletter are images of two wonderful pipebags which date to 1880s-1890s. Both are in excellent condition. Also pictured is a compelling Zuni jar with ladle use wear on the rim (from the 1870s) along with an early black-on-black jar by Maria Martinez.

Philadelphia Antiques and Art Show and more

Be sure to mark the Philadelphia Antiques and Art Show 2019 on your calendar! The show opens with a Preview Party on April 25, 2019 and continues with general admission Friday, April 26, 2019 through Sunday, April 28, 2019. It is being held in a structural tent at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Show hours are as follows:

Friday, April 26: 11 am - 8 pm

Saturday, April 27: 11 am - 8 pm

Sunday, April 28: 11 am - 5 pm

This show benefits the Philadelphia Museum of Art and is Presented by the Women’s Committee.

DIRECTIONS TO THE TENT AT THE NAVY YARD:

Go south on Broad Street to the Navy Yard. JUST BEFORE THE GATES, turn left on to League Island Blvd.   Follow League Island around through 2 stop signs to Kitty Hawk Ave and you will see the tent.  

We will be presenting 3 amazing and important pots by Nancy Youngblood. These pots have just been added to our website (click each for a link to more information). We will also present masterworks by other premier Pueblo artists from the 1990s-early 2000s. These include pots by Nathan Youngblood, Tammy Garcia, Maria Martiez, Grace Medicine Flower, Richard Zane Smith, LuAnn Tafoya, Tse Pe, and more.
