Maria Martinez made, slipped and polished the pot and it was probably was painted by Julian.

Maria Martinez is considered the Matriarch of contemporary San Ildefonso pottery. She and her husband Julian were accomplished potters who made polychrome pots in the late 19th century. After they saw black shards of earlier pottery that archaeologists were finding, Maria and Julian decided to revive the tradition of blackware. Their first black-on-black pots date to the 1920s.

This jar, signed "Marie", can be dated by the signature, which was used between 1923-mid-1930s. Its shape is influenced by earlier jars. It has survived the years in excellent condition, with only a few minor scratches.
