Polik Mana (or Butterfly Maiden) represents life, fertility, and rain to the Hopi and to the Zuni, both of whom live in very arid climates. This Zuni bracelet is a clear representation of Polik Mana.
The stone work is a combination of mosaic and channel inlay. It takes a very skilled lapidary to precisely cut and insert these stones. C G Wallace was the trader at Zuni who successfully encouraged the native artists to excel in this kind of work. He also had several Navajo (Dine’) silversmiths work alongside the best of the Zuni artists. Beautiful silverwork is also on this bracelet.
