People often ask what the frogs represent on Historic Zuni jars such as this one? We can date the jar to about the late 19th-early 20th centuries but we do not have direct knowledge of the purpose of the frogs. Many people believe that the frogs represent vitality in an arid climate such as the one in which the Zuni live. Some jars may have been used ceremonially but there is no indication that this jar was ever used for that purpose.
This jar has resided in Marcy Burns’ personal collection for a very long time and is now being offered for sale for the first time.
It is remarkable that the frogs have survived the years in such fine condition. Often, the frogs heads were knocked off accidentally while in collections.
