This small seed jar by Grace Medicine Flower is a fine example of sgraffito work. Grace Medicine Flower is one of the contemporary artists who excels at this technique. The jar is coiled, slipped and polished in the traditional manner. The design is then developed by “scraping away” layers of the slip. It is very difficult to do this technique, as the artist has to be careful not to cut too deeply into the coil or the pot will be ruined. Firing is done in the traditional manner, over an open fire.
