Invitation to visit our booth at the Philadephia Antiques Show

We are only two weeks away from the Philadephia Antiques Show and excitement has been building. The show promises to be better than ever.

Like other dealers in the show, I plan on bringing many wonderful items fresh to the market. As the brochure says, "For over 50 years the Philadelphia Show has been recognized as one of this country's finest - 2016 will remind you why!" After a hiatus of a year, the show is reemerging at a much improved site, the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The Philadelphia Antiques Show is being held in a structured tent (just like a building) with improved and easy access for dealers and customers alike.

I will be featuring an amazing selection of  pottery ranging from Historic to Contemporary, textiles that include a rare and early Sandpainting rug, pictorial Navajo blankets, and a fresh and stunning Germantown blanket, as well as  baskets, beadwork, and jewelry, including Native American and Mexican.

I am joining other dealers in contributing a favorite object from my personal collection to the museum exhibit, "Secret Treasures: The Passion of Collecting as seen through Dealers and Their Collections".   In the exhibit, I explain why this item will never be for sale.

For more information about the show, be sure to go to http://www.marcyburns.com/shows/

Preview Party: Thursday, April 14: 5 pm

Delaware Show Booth 2015

Delaware Show Booth 2015

Thank you to all of you who were able to attend the recent Delaware Antiques Show. It was gratifying to see you and of course, I appreciate all who found a treasure to purchase.  It was nice that so many people kept my booth buzzing throughout the days of the show. The show itself was very well received and I have no doubt that the reviews will be glowing.

Acoma pitcher collected by Stevenson

Acoma pitcher collected by Stevenson

This Acoma pitcher was collected by Col. James Stevenson and his wife Mathilda Coxe Stevenson in 1884. Stevenson archives reveal that its accession number by the BAE (later incorporated into the Smithsonian) is 110354. The Smithsonian frequently traded or gifted pieces from their collection to supporters of the museum and it is likely that this is how this pot came to be in private hands.

Plains Parfleche cases

We have recently acquired a collection of 19th century parfleche cases. These pouches are made out of stiffened rawhide and are painted with geometric designs. The Plains Indians carried their clothing, tools, and personal treasures in these type of cases as they traveled, following the buffalo.

Here are photos and information about each of these 3 parfleches. All are in excellent condition.  Each can be purchased individually or as an outstanding collection of parfleches.

Each can also be seen on our website by clicking the link:

Acquisitions and Upcoming Shows

NEW ACQUISITIONS (PART 1):

I am excited to have recently acquired two major collections of Pueblo and Hopi pottery:  One collection features postwar works  by the Matriarchs and other 20th century Master Potters. The other collection features very important Historic Pueblo and Hopi pottery, including 2 pots collected by Stevenson for the Smithsonian.  I have also acquired a collection of parfleche bags. These objects are all fresh to the market.

I will be posting frequent blogs featuring some of the individual items but be sure to go to the website frequently to see other additions as they are posted.  If you follow my Facebook page, you will see notices for some of the new items posted to the website. Just click the little "f" in a blue circle and it will take you to the Facebook page.

A second newsletter will follow shortly with more detailed information on the Delaware Show as well as information about some of the Historic pottery that I recently acquired.

A NEW VENTURE:

From October 23-29, my husband, Richard Schillay, and I will be hosting a booth at the  INTERNATIONAL SHOW (formerly known as THE INTERNATIONAL FINE ART AND ANTIQUE DEALERS SHOW). We will be presenting a one-person show of ceramic art by Cliff Lee. The show is held at The Park Avenue Armory, 67th and Park Avenue, NYC. The booth number is D7.

Cliff's work is simply exquisite. He is a neurosurgeon who years ago gave up his practice to devote himself solely to his art. His works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the White House Collection, Yale University Art Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and others. Here is a link to some of Cliff Lee's works: http://www.cliffleeporcelain.com

If you would like a complimentary pass, please send me an email and I will send you e-ticket(s) to the show.

THE DELAWARE ANTIQUES SHOW COMING SOON!

Be sure to save the dates, which are November 6-8 with the Opening Night Party on November 5th. It is held at The Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware. This show is considered a must go-to show for collectors of American Antiques. Not only is it one of the oldest Americana Shows, it is considered one of the very finest American Antique Shows. My booth will be filled with fresh material -- a tremendous opportunity for collectors. More about what I will be bringing will follow soon. Here is the link to the Delaware Show information: http://www.winterthur.org/?p=1097

Remember, there are no sales taxes in Delaware!

Report from Santa Fe, new inventory and more...

Good news from the recent Santa Fe shows for collectors and dealers: the shows were strong, sales were brisk, and dealers were buying new inventory.  In addition, I have acquired a private collection of post-war Pueblo pottery that I will be adding to my website. This collection features works by Pueblo matriarchs and artists who are considered modern masters.

I will do my best to frequently add fresh items. Please also do not hesitate to ask about a particular interest of yours...there are many objects that are not posted online.

Here are a few examples of fresh inventory that I just posted to my website:

An early Reservation pipebag/tobacco bag: http://www.marcyburns.com/beadwork-and-wood-collection/sioux-beaded-pipebagtobacco-bag

An early Acoma/Laguna polychrome jar that is very large: https://marcyburns.squarespace.com/config#/pages|/pottery-collection/acomalaguna-large-polychrome-jar

Advantages to buying from a reputable dealer

A customer recently asked me about an item on Ebay. In formulating my response, I focused on what a collector gains when he or she purchases from a known, named, and established dealer.

I offer good and clear title to all objects sold by me. I fully warranty the authenticity and condition of the work. I sell only items of high quality. If there are repairs that I am able to detect, I readily disclose that information to the collector. I believe in the material that I sell and I own a large majority of my inventory.

In addition, I am available to collectors who want help in formulating a collection. I also offer advice to customers on the best way and time to sell their art and jewelry, if they so wish. For a very modest fee, I am available to advise and bid for customers if an auction has objects that they would like to purchase.

These collective services are rarely provided to the collector by an auction, whether it is online or on site.

Please contact me if you would like to learn more.

ADA ONLINE SHOW OPENING IN A FEW DAYS

The Antique Dealers Association of America (ADA), composed of the top Americana dealers in the country, is holding another Online Show. It will be opening on April 28, 2015 at 10 am and will run continuously through April 30th at 10 pm. Dealers will be offering exciting material in this show, just as they do at the traditional Americana shows like the Philadelphia Antiques Show and the Delaware Antiques Show. Prices will vary as will categories of material but all are high quality and are fully warrantied.  There is likely to be something there that will catch your eye!

These shows have been very well received by the public and press. "Attendance" has dramatically increased with each show. Don't miss out!

Rare Navajo Sandpainting Rug

Rare Navajo Sandpainting Rug

We are thrilled to offer for sale a very rare and fresh-to-the-market Navajo sand painting  rug. The Navajo traditionally proscribe the replication of drawings in sand that are made by the medicine man at the height of a ceremony. These images are sacred and are destroyed at the end of the ceremony. It is believed that anyone who replicates them will suffer harm.

There were a very few Navajo weavers in the 1920s who began to weave textiles with these ceremonial designs, some to preserve the tradition and others in response to the strong demand by  the marketplace. The weavers usually altered a few of the details...
